Samsung India launches the world’s first OMH handset, Mpower 699

Samsung is looking to change that with the launch of the world’s first OMH phone, Mpower 699, in the Indian market in cooperation with Qualcomm.
The revolutionary OMH technology, available on the CDMA platform, gives mobile customers the flexibility to buy a CDMA handset and SIM cards from various CDMA operators of their choice, since the network settings for the connection shift from the phone to the OMH SIM card.
Announcing the launch of Samsung Mpower 699 in the Indian market, Mr. Jung Soo Shin, President & CEO, Samsung South West Asia HQ stated: “This OMH launch represents a paradigm shift in the dynamics of the CDMA ecosystem with consumers now having the flexibility to choose an operator at their will at any point in time. OMH empowers a CDMA customer as never before and will serve to fuel the growth in the CDMA handset market. We at Samsung are proud to be leading this innovation with Qualcomm and appreciate the support given by CDMA operators towards popularizing OMH.”
“OMH handsets, such as Samsung’s feature rich Mpower 699, play a central role in offering Indian subscribers the freedom, flexibility and choice to easily change or upgrade their handsets. With currently more than 100 million CDMA subscribers, we expect OMH to play a key role in driving the growth of CDMA in India,” said Kanwalinder Singh, Senior Vice President of Qualcomm Inc and president of Qualcomm India and South Asia.
The switch over process to new OMH SIM cards from existing R-UIM/SIM connections is very easy, the company says, adding that the phone also supports the existing R-UIM/SIM for voice and SMS as well as data services. In addition, the OMH SIM too is backward compatible to support all previously launched CDMA handsets which support R-UIMs/SIMs.
As for the phone itself, here are the specifications:
Screen: 2.2 inches, 256K colours, 176x220 pixels resolution

Sony India launches DSC-TX1 and DSX-WX1 low-light cameras with HD video

Sony has launched two new Cyber-shot cameras – one sleek and stylish, the other with a wholelot of zoom – in India, both of which are the first out of the company’s stable to use the new Exmor R back-illuminated CMOS sensor technology.
“By redesigning the way these cameras capture light, Sony is leading the industry by creating this easy way to take amazingly clear, vibrant photos in low lighting scenarios,” said Phil Lubell, director of the digital imaging business at Sony Electronics.
Conventional image sensor architecture has required wires and other circuit elements to be positioned above the light sensitive photo-diodes, limiting the imager’s light gathering capability. Positioning these elements behind the photo-diodes, the Exmor R image sensors can gather more light, resulting in approximately twice the sensitivity compared to conventional sensors.
To further extend low-light shooting performance, the TX1 and WX1 cameras incorporate the hand-held twilight and anti-motion blur multi-shot modes introduced in Sony’s Cyber-shot DSC-HX1. Using the Exmor R CMOS sensor’s high speed, these modes capture six separate images in less than a second and utilise Sony’s BIONZ processor to combine the shots into a single image of extraordinary detail.
In addition, the TX1 and WX1 cameras also include Sweep Panorama and 10 frames per second burst shooting features, in smaller, more compact bodies that match nearly any unique style. Capturing wide landscapes is as easy as “press and sweep.” The BIONZ imaging processor automatically stitches the pictures together to create one stunning panoramic photo.

With HD video capability, these cameras record HD movies in 720p high definition MPEG4 format for stunning large-screen home movie playback. You can record up to 29 minutes (or up to 2GB file size) in 720p format.
In its slim profile of just 16.5mm, the fashionable 10.2-megapixel TX1 features a new operation on the touch panel that lets you scroll through images with a flick of your finger and directly access menus on the 3-inch Clear Photo LCD Plus display.
With a Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens, the TX1 camera lets you focus as little as 0.4 inches from your subject for extraordinary close-up shots. The 4x telescopic zoom is perfect for capturing far-away subjects, and Sony’s Optical SteadyShot image stabilisation helps overcome camera shake.
The 10.2 mega-pixel WX1 camera has a 2.7-inch Clear Photo LCD Plus display and is just over three quarters of an inch thin – an ideal choice for DSLR owners who also want to carry a compact, high performance digital still camera.
The WX1 camera features a Sony G lens with an extraordinary wide angle 24-120mm 5x optical zoom. This lens’ f/2.4 maximum aperture offers nearly twice the light gathering capability of conventional lenses, and works together with the Exmor R sensor and low-light shooting modes to provide low-light photography beyond the abilities of other compact cameras.
These cameras also include all the next-gen software technology that Sony cameras are famous for, such as intelligent auto mode, face detection, scene selection, red-eye removal, anti-blur, smile shutter, etc.
The TX1 is available in a grey colour scheme for Rs. 20,990, while the WX1 with black casing retails for Rs. 19,990.

Hitachi GST launches Fast 500GB Laptop Drive

Hitachi GST has unveiled its fifth-generation, 7200 RPM mobile hard disk drive — the Hitachi Travelstar 7K500. The 500GB, 2.5-inch, 3Gb/s SATA drive has been designed for notebooks, gaming systems and professional external storage solutions. The new Travelstar 7K500 is a hardy drive and the fastest in its class delivering up to 56 percent higher capacity and 16 percent better application performance than its predecessor. It also provides best-of-breed operating shock and outstanding power management for sturdy, unplugged notebook performance. The Travelstar 7K500 is also one of the first mobile drives to be compliant with the Trusted Computing Group’s (TCG) Opal storage security specification, a new open standard designed to strengthen data protection and safeguard notebooks in the event of system loss or theft. When the Hitachi BDE option is enabled, the hard drive will encrypt all data that comes from the system as it is written to the media. When read back, the drive decrypts the data so that it can be understood by the system. Since the hard drive is doing the encryption work, there is no impact on system performance
“Portable PC shipment growth continues to be one of the most significant market drivers underpinning 2.5-inch disk drive demand, and is a major reason why IDC expects the 2.5-inch mobile HDD market will grow at a 16.8 percent 2008-2013 compound annual growth rate,” said John Rydning, research director for hard disk drives at IDC. “Hitachi’s new 500GB mobile 2.5-inch HDD with a 7,200 rpm spin-speed provides PC OEMs an opportunity to differentiate PCs with both capacity and performance.”
The Travelstar 7K500 has also been designed for energy efficiency with superior low power consumption at 0.69 watts idle power and 1.8 watts during read/write operations, leading to longer battery life in notebooks and other mobile applications. Volume shipments of the Travelstar 7K500 will begin later this month. Capacities include 120GB, 160GB, 250GB, 320GB and 500GB.

Here is 7 great tips and tricks to optimize your netbook

1. Use a lightweight Media Player and codec pack to play all your favorite videos and music (e.g. Cole2k Codec Pack and Media Player Classic HC 1.2).

2. Uninstall programs you no longer use, especially trial software, as these can clutter up the drive. TuneUp Uninstall Manager of our TuneUp Utilities 2009 helps you immensely with that, because it tells you which programs you regularly use and which you don't.

3. Defrag the hard drive to better manage your data and keep your computer running fast. We recommend using TuneUp Utilities 2009 to safely and consistently do this on a regular basis.

4. Reduce the user interface of Internet Explorer, Firefox, and other Web browsers to better utilize the smaller “real estate” on your netbook. Right-click on the upper menu bar of your browser and uncheck unnecessary menu items.

5. Go back to the classic Windows look and feel. Animations can hinder the system's performance. To do that, right-click on your desktop and go to “Properties” (XP) or “Personalize” (Vista). Under the “Design” entry, select the classic design and hit “OK.”

6. Disable unnecessary devices, such as Bluetooth, FireWire, and Wi-Fi, to save battery power.

7. Don't run too many applications at the same time. Multitasking is better suited for a laptop, whereas netbooks are designed for basic use such as word processing and simple Web browsing.

Nokia RX-51 a.k.a N-900 and Maemo 5 get some hands-on time

Here are some of the salient features of the review, although we recommend you read the entire article:
*A side-slider form factor, unlike the kick-stand of the N97. The build quality is comparable to that of the E75.
*The resistive touchscreen persists, although it is a lot more responsive than the N97, probably because of Maemo 5 replacing S60. A variety of visual effects and smooth transitions give it an iPhone-like feel, which was sorely missing in the N97.
*The 5-megapixel camera is the same as that on the N97, but a much-needed lens shutter keeps it clean this time around.
* Maemo 5 does not differ greatly from Maemo 4 for the Nokia N810, but offers a faster boot time and there is partial compatibility for old Apps.
In conclusion, the author writes that it probably won’t become a hit, but the Nokia N900 is still a powerhouse of a phone that is important for the industry and sets the platform for bigger things to come from the Finnish manufacturer.

Xbox 360 failure rate is over 50 percent!

A consumer survey by Game Informer magazine has revealed some astounding facts, the prime among them being that one out of every two Xbox 360 units sold is malfunctional; yet, owners will be undeterred by the hardware failure and still buy the console in the future!

Game Informer conducted a survey of over 5,000 readers, asking them questions about all three next-gen video game consoles.

The Xbox 360 has been notorious for a string of technical failures, the most widely renowned being the dreaded ‘Red Ring Of Death’. This author himself has faced that problem and knows quite a few others who have encountered Microsoft’s new version of the BSOD.

The survey found that the Xbox 360 has a 54.2 per cent failure rate, compared to 10.6 per cent for the PS3 and the Wii's 6.8 per cent.

“Microsoft also seized the gold medal for unhelpful customer service, taking nearly a month to repair or replace a console, while Nintendo and Sony stuck closer to a week. Only 37.7 percent of Microsoft customers found the company's customer service was "very helpful," compared to 51.1 percent of Sony and 56.1 percent for Nintendo,” reported The Consumerist.

The only positive aspect for the Redmond giant was that of the three consoles, the Xbox 360 is definitely used the most. “About 40.3 per cent of 360 owners play it 3 to 5 hours a day, with 37 per cent of PS3 owners doing the same. And unsurprisingly, a full 40.4 per cent of Wii owners turn that console on less than an hour a day,” Gizmodo wrote.

The most shocking number from the survey – and frightening from a consumer perspective – is only 3.8 percent of Xbox 360 owners said they'd never buy another Xbox because of hardware failure. And we thought we were the only masochists around.
