How to Install Windows 7

Check Your Machine's Specs

The first thing to do is check whether your desktop or laptop PC is capable of running Windows 7. If it's already running Vistawith acceptable performance, then the answer is yes. Officially, you need at least a 1-GHz CPU and 1GB RAM, but testers of the OS have successfully got it running on machines as out of date as a 266-MHz Pentium II with 96MB of RAM. Go ahead and try that kind of thing if you want, just don't use your license key on that type of machine. It may run, but you'll spend a lot of time waiting for it, and it won't display the glassy new Aero interface and enhancements.

If you're unsure whether your current system can run Windows 7, download and run Microsoft's Upgrade Advisor to assess your hardware's capabilities. When I ran it on an aging XP laptop, it told me I needed to back up my files and perform a Custom installation (see below), that my hard disk didn't have enough free space (you need 16GB), and that the laptop wouldn't run Aero Desktop. The good news, however, was that my 1.6-GHz CPU and 1.5GB RAM were sufficient. The advisor actually checks a lot more than the basic system requirements, and it lists every piece of hardware and software you have installed at the bottom of its report.

Choose an Edition

Home Premium, Home Basic, Professional, and Ultimate. The key thing to consider here is that you have to do a clean installation without the ability to carry your apps along if you move from one level of Vista to another level of Windows 7, say from Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Professional. The exception is Windows 7 Ultimate, which will let you perform an in-place upgrade from any level of Vista as long as you don't change whether you're using the 32- or 64-bit version.

After that Choose 64-bit or 32-bit

After Running Setup

Once the setup has run its course, you'll be asked to type in a username (20 characters maximum) and computer name (15 characters maximum). Then you're asked for a password, password confirmation, and password hint. (You can bypass this last step if you're not worried about others getting into your PC.) After this, you're supposed to enter your product key, but since you have a 30-day trial, you don't need to right away. The same page by default sets the system to automatically activate Windows, but you may want to uncheck this if you're just trying out the OS. After 30 days, you'll see messages and warnings that you need to Activate, so it's not like you can forget about it.

Then you choose Security settings. The large choice at the top for Default Settings makes a lot of sense—it turns on automatic updates and checks online to resolve problems. The other two choices, "Install important updates only" and "Ask me later," leave you a bit less protected. After this, you'll be prompted for your Time Zone and be given a chance to check the date and time. Windows gets this over the Internet, so you shouldn't have to set it manually.

Now comes the Welcome screen and the "Windows is preparing your Desktop" Message. And that's it—you're running Windows 7! You'll likely see updates in available in Windows Update, which will probably require a restart.

Nikon Coolpix S1000pj

As the point-and-shoot digital camera market matures, it seems like flashy, never-before-seen features are what manufacturers are using to make their shooters stand out of the crowded pack. Case in point: The $350 Samsung DualView TL225, which features two LCDs, including a forward-facing display so you can easily capture self-portraits. But this pocket camera also offers excellent image quality and a very solid feature set for the price. Another example: Nikon's 12.1-megapixel Coolpix S1000pj ($429.95 list), which grabs your attention with its built-in projector that can project images onto a nearby wall, so you don't have to huddle around the camera to see the photos or video you've captured. But unlike the Samsung TL225, which is a terrific camera that happens to have a buzz-worthy feature, the S1000pj, besides its projector, is an otherwise mediocre camera that comes at an extraordinary price.

                        LG launches 3 mid-range touchscreen phones in India: GW525, GT505 and GM730

LG Electronics India has introduced three new handsets that like to claim the titles of ‘mini computers’ – the GW525, GT505 and GM730.
                        LG GW525
The LG GW525 is designed with messaging on-the-move in mind, be that via social networks, email or SMS and IM. Easy to use, accessible messaging features, combined with a 2.8-inch touchscreen and side-slide QWERTY keypad make this the ultimate device to stay in touch with friends and family.
The new LiveSquare feature shows your favourite friends as animated characters on your screen. If one of those contacts sends you a text, their character will tell you that there is a message waiting.
The GW525 retails in India at Rs. 13,990.
                        LG GT505
Like the GW525, the LG GT505 also offers push social networking services, consumer push email and business push email via Microsoft Exchange Active Sync. In addition, the GT505’s 3-inch touchscreen and GPS functions make it an ideal navigation device.
It comes preloaded with a 30-day free trial of ‘Wisepilot for LG’ – a turn-by-turn navigation solution with voice instruction and a choice of 2D or 3D mapping to guide you.
The handset packs in a bit of fun too, with a 5-megapixel camera that lets you take great snaps and then share them with your friends via social networks
The GT505 retails in India at Rs. 14,990.
                        LG GM730
Built around a 3D cube layout, the S-class UI of LG GM730 and Windows Mobile combination makes the device quite easy to operate. By connecting the phone’s email, schedule and contact lists, users can send and receive messages using less key presses than on regular smartphones.
Advanced multimedia features such as a 5-megapixel camera, MP3 player and numerous action-packed games make this phone a full-featured entertainment device.
The 11.9mm-thick GM730 retails in India at Rs. 22,490.

Your Windows 7 Upgrade: Why and How

Microsoft offers a free Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor and that is the best place to begin your upgrade odyssey. Also, here is a link to the official Windows 7 Upgrade and Migration page. You may want to read it before making your upgrade decision.

Be warned: Vista users get to upgrade while XP users will migrate to the new OS. The difference is important, as you will see.

Windows Vista Users -- If you have survived this long with Windows Vista, you may be in no hurry to upgrade. People who like Vista may actually consider Windows 7 a step backwards in some regards.

The good news is that you can upgrade a Windows Vista machine to Windows 7 with a minimum of difficulty. Also, a machine that runs Vista may run Windows 7 a bit faster.

Windows XP Users -- On the Windows Upgrade Advisor page, Microsoft states: "If your PC can run Windows Vista, it can probably run Windows 7, but it's still a good idea to use the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor."

That means newer Windows XP machines can migrate to Windows 7, perhaps where you chose not to have Windows Vista preinstalled. However, if you are running a 5-year-old XP machine, I would not expect to upgrade or to have some regrets if you do.

Be warned that there is no easy upgrade option for Windows XP to Windows 7. Here is what Microsoft has to say about it:

"The upgrade option is not available in Windows 7 Setup when installing Windows 7 on a computer running Windows XP. However, you can use Windows Easy Transfer to migrate files and settings from Windows XP to Windows 7 on the same computer.

"To do this, you must first copy files to a removable media, such as an external hard drive or UFD, or to a network share. Next, you will install Windows 7 and then migrate your files back from the removable media onto your computer. When you are finished, you must install your software programs again, but your files and settings will have been copied from Windows XP."

Corporate IT -- I will not presume to tell IT Pros whether to upgrade. I believe many companies will find the new enterprise features of Windows 7 a good reason to switch, though many may wait until the OS has been on the market for a while and the presumed kinks have been worked out.

Small Business -- I treat small businesses much like consumers and, to that extent, I don't recommend upgrading XP machines unless they are fairly new and you don't mind having some people running XP and others running Windows 7.

Windows 7 is a very nice OS, but upgrading and migrating is not as simple as it might be. Have fun shopping for a new Windows 7 machine.

Windows 7, Microsoft’s most widely tested product, launches at a price cut in India

On Thursday, Microsoft launched its most highly-anticipated product, Windows 7, across the world. And for once, users in India have gotten a break.

According to Microsoft, the Windows 7 beta program had over eight million people signing up for it, making this the most widely-rested beta product in the company’s history. The different versions of Windows 7 are available in India at the following prices:
                        Windows 7 Home Basic - Rs. 5,899
                        Windows 7 Home Premium - Rs. 6,799
                        Windows 7 Professional - Rs. 11,199
                        Windows 7 Ultimate - Rs. 11,799

The prices are significantly lower than the product is retailing at in the US. So far, the cheapest way to get Windows 7 seems to be in Indonesia, where the Home Basic package costs Rp 9,00,000 (Rs. 4,400 approx).

GigaByte launches mid-range GV-R5700 series of DX11 graphics cards in India

Gigabyte GV-R575D5-1GD graphics card, based on the ATI Radeon HD5750

GigaByte Techology, a leading manufacturer of motherboards and graphics cards, has released two new graphics cards based on ATI’s new Radeon HD 5700 series in India.
The first is the GigaByte GV-R577D5-1GD-B, which comes with 1GB DDR5 RAM and is based on the ATI Radeon HD 5770 architecture. The second card is the GigaByte GV-R575D5-1GD, which also has 1GB DDR5 RAM and is based on the ATI Radeon HD 5750 architecture.
The GigaByte HD 5700 Series graphics cards provide support for Microsoft DirectX 11, ATI Eyefinity Technology, ATI Stream technology, Quad mode ATI CrossFireX multi-GPU, UDV 2 and PowerPlay; thus offering an immersive HD gaming experience and unrivaled performance.
The GigaByte HD 5700 Series graphics cards feature ATI's latest 2nd Generation TeraScale graphics engine, boasting the power of more than 2 teraFLOPS with 800 and 720 stream processors respectively. With 1GB GDDR5 memory, the GigaByte HD 5700 Series provides twice the data per pin of GDDR3 memory at the same clock speeds.
Utilising the ATI Eyefinity Technology, each gamer can run up to 3 displays from a single graphics board and expand the field of view across all displays. This is perfect for gamers who like to enjoy the ultimate gaming experience with innovative “wrap around” multi-displays.
Furthermore, benefiting from ATI Stream Technology, end-users can easily unleash the massive parallel processing power of GPU for physics, artificial intelligence, stream computing and ray tracing calculations, and tackle demanding tasks like video transcoding with incredible speed.
In addition, GigaByte HD 5700 Series graphics cards fully support for Microsoft DirectX 11 for life-like realism and stunning 3D gaming effects. Gamers can get striking 3D visual effects and dynamic interactivity with DirectX 11 support, including features like Tessellation, HDR Texture Compression, Multi-threading and DirectCompute.
In order to provide the best digital audio/video interconnection between a computer and display monitor or home-theater system, the GigaByte HD 5700 Series graphics cards are capable of outputting DisplayPort s
ignals. The DisplayPort interface can support higher resolutions, richer colour depth, and increased refresh rate performance, delivering 10.8Gbps of bandwidth over previous generations of connectivity options such as DVI, LVDS and VGA, as well as normal HDMI – thus making it compatible with large-screen home theatre displays.
And if you are concerned that all this will take up a lot of power, worry not: The GigaByte GV-R5700 series is equipped with ATI PowerPlay technology for breakthrough power and consumption, maximising performance per watt by delivering the highest level of high performance when needed and conserving power when the demand on the GPU is low.
The HD5770-based GigaByte GV-R577D5-1GD-B can be bought now for Rs. 10,900.
The HD5750-based GigaByte GV-R575D5-1GD retails at Rs. 9,900.

                        HP TouchSmart 600-1055 PC

The HP TouchSmart 600-1055 PC ($1,599 list) is HP's third generation of TouchSmart PCs for the home. HP pioneered touch computing for the home and each successive generation has gotten better. The latest model combines HP's Touch experience with Microsoft's support built into Windows 7 (a.k.a., Microsoft Touch Pack for Windows 7). The result is a system that I can finally recommend without reservation to both the touch aficionado and the average home user, and earns it our Editors' Choice for mainstream all in one desktops.

                        Features
Our review unit, the top-of-the-line 600-1055 model: the system is powered by a 2.13GHz Intel Core 2 Duo P7450 processor, has 4GB of DDR3 memory, Nvidia GeForce GT230M graphics, and has a decent 750GB hard drive. There's also a 600-1050 model with a slower processor and lower powered graphics, and a TouchSmart 300 series line with a smaller 20-inch screen. Both TouchSmart 600s also come with a TV tuner, making it HDTV-capable out of the box. Just hook up an external antenna and voila; you have free over the air (OTC) HDTV on your TouchSmart. The screen is bright and handles action well: It displayed a decent, streak-free1080p picture on our test discs like
X-Men: The Last Stand and Mission Impossible. The 600 series' little brother, the TouchSmart 300 series, has a smaller 20-inch touch screen. Less expensive versions of 600 and 300 series TouchSmart PCs make do without options like the HDMI port, Blu-ray, or TV tuners. One nice feature is that you can watch live TV in HP's TouchSmart interface: in the past you had to quit out of TouchSmart Home and retrun to Windows to watch Hulu, TV, and movies in Vista Media Center or in Internet Explorer.

The system's wireless keyboard slides right under the TouchSmart's screen into a little cubbyhole. There's an adjustable ambient lighting bar under the screen to light the keyboard in dark rooms. The screen tilts to accommodate both people standing and those that slouch deep into the chair. There's also a VESA mount option, and unlike previous models you can no wremove the feet so the screen looks cleaner when mounted on a wall. Also new is a pivot on the back "foot," so it's easier to pivot the screen to show to a group seated around the PC. All this adjustability make the TouchSmart a pleasure to use in almost any setting.

                        Acer Aspire One AOD250 (Android)

                        Android Dissected
No matter how you slice it, Android is a Linux-based operating system. It'll look foreign at first, but Acer did its best to make this early release intuitive. Dual-booting Google's Android operating system isn't that bold when you can leave at anytime and head back to Windows XP Home Edition. Acer already made that mistake once by shipping a netbook with only Linux installed, and it suffered a high return rate because of it.

There are four "gadgets" visible on the main screen in Android, they include Google Talk, FireFox's Web browser, Webmail, and Calendar. What looks like a peel-off tab on the top left corner gets you back into Windows XP, in case frustration builds—and it will. On the far right is a slide-out tab that houses a drawer filled with 20 other gadgets that control anything from system settings, your music files and photo, Webcam, Gmail, etc.A reboot is required to enter Android. When you're in Windows XP, there's an Android configuration tool right on the desktop, which lets you activate the Android OS so that it's the first thing that boots. Within this tool, you can also log into your Google account, create POP mail accounts, automate software updates, and recover Android if anything goes wrong.

The Escape, Arrow, and Enter keys are your closest allies in this operating system. Any time you get lost or get too deep into an application, you can ESC-key back out into the home page. Whether it's punching in Wi-Fi settings, changing the wallpaper, or customizing power management settings, these tasks are made simple by Android. All the options are laid out in big gray tabs, where it's just a matter of clicking them with your mouse button or hitting the Enter key.

Setting up a Gmail and hotmail accounts were simple. You don't have look for incoming and outgoing server addresses; just punch in your username and password, and Android configures and gets mail in your inbox in a matter of seconds. You can receive e-mails with attachments, as long as they're media files (there is currently no document support in this release, and Android Marketplace is not available in this build, so you can't purchase and download a document editing program; you can e-mail Word documents or spreadsheets, but Android won't recognize them). With Google Talk and Google Calendar access, you'll need to have an account ready before you can run them in Android. FireFox is your Web browser, which handled most Websites the same way a Windows version would, including sites like Youtube, Flickr, Facebook, and Twitter. A Web site like Hulu, however, didn't work because Adobe Flash Player 10 won't be available for Android until next year.

Windows 7 Likely to Be Better Enterprise Fit Than Vista

Corporate PCs are three times more likely to be equipped to run Windows 7 than had been capable of running Windows Vista when the often-maligned OS was released.
Or at least that is what Softchoice, an IT management company, is reporting about the 450,000 corporate PCs it manages.
According to Softchoice, 88 percent of the corporate PCs it has under management meet the minimum system requirements of Windows 7. Of those not yet equipped to run Windows 7, the majority would simply require more RAM and/or bigger hard disks. To run Windows 7, only 1 percent of PCs would require replacement.

If you look at the optimum configuration for Windows 7 rather than the minimum configuration, 65 percent of Softchoice-managed PCs are Windows 7-ready, and 5 percent would need outright replacement, according to Softchoice. This compares very favorably with the state of Windows PCs.

                        LG 42SL80 Televison Review

LG's 42-inch 42SL80 ($1,699.95 list) is as much about aesthetics as it is about picture quality. Not only is this attractive 42-inch LCD HDTV slimmer than most CCFL (fluorescent) backlit models, it uses edge-to-edge glass and hidden speakers to further accentuate its streamlined appearance. Overall, the television delivers solid image quality and offers a neat, easy-to-use calibration tool to help you get the best picture. But the set has trouble displaying some standard-definition content and, despite the use of fast 240-Hz technology, is prone to occasional motion errors.

The 42SL80 draws an average of 210 watts of power, which translates to an operating cost of approximately $3.60 per month based on 5 hours of daily use, using the 2008 national average cost of $0.1135 per kWh (kilowatt hours). While not exactly a power hog, it's not quite as energy efficient as the larger, 47-inch 47LH55, which costs around $2.77 per month to operate and draws an average of 159 watts. LG covers the 42SL80 with a one year parts and labor warranty.
Overall, the LG 42SL80 combines the latest style with cutting-edge 240-Hz technology, and delivers a solid HD picture. If you can live with its unremarkable standard-definition performance and the occasional motion error, it's a good choice for anyone seeking a streamlined 42-inch HDTV that will look great in any room.
