Fact-checking Microsoft's Latest Anti-Apple Ads

Microsoft's latest, subtly anti-Apple ads are all over the Web and broadcast TV. The new Microsoft "Laptop Hunters-Lauren" commercial suggests that there is only one Apple laptop under $1,000 and it has a 13-inch screen. For the same money, it claims, you can get a better Windows-based laptop with a 17-inch screen. True? It is, but that isn't the whole story.

In the 60-second ad, Lauren is looking for a new laptop, one that has "speed, has a comfortable keyboard, and a 17-inch screen" for under $1,000. An on-screen card and the voiceover drives home the point that Microsoft is giving her the money to buy the system: "You find it, you keep it." She goes shopping, first to a "Mac Store," where she can find only one computer for under $1,000, a MacBook with a 13-inch screen. Is this possible? Fraid so.

The only MacBook you can afford for under $1,000 at the Apple Store is the 13-inch MacBook for $999. New MacBook Pro 17-inch models are way over Lauren's budget starting at $2,799, and pre-owned 17-inchers are still going for over $1,000 at places like smalldog.com, powermax.com and usedmac.com. You can get a used PowerBook G4 17-inch for under $1,000, but you wouldn't necessarily want that when those PowerBooks have less than 2GB of RAM and small hard drives. Sure, she could get a Mac mini for $599, keyboard, mouse, and an external 20-inch display for under $300, but somehow I don't think she would be interested, since it's not portable.

Back to the ad: Lauren then goes to a Best Buy, where she quickly dismisses ultraportables. She checks out various laptops, including a $949.99 model from Sony (looks like the Sony VAIO VGN-FW351J/H to me), and a Gateway FX laptop that's above her budget, before honing in on two 17-inch laptops—a $749.99Dell Studio 17 laptop and an HP Pavilion. Cue stereotypical shopping decision squeal, and she decides on the HP. The balance due is shown on screen as $699.99.

The online version of the ad has a direct link to the model in question; it's a HP Pavilion dv7-1245dx. It comes with an AMD Turion X2 RM-72 processor, 4GB of memory, 320GB hard drive, ATI Radeon HD 3200 integrated graphics, DVD burner, and the all-important 17-inch WXGA+ (1,440 x 900) screen. I wanted to check this system out so I asked PCMag's laptop lead analyst, Cisco Cheng, if we have a HP Pavilion dv7 on the shelf somewhere. He said "DV7? That's an old laptop.

"What is Microsoft getting at?

If Microsoft's point is to stick it to Apple and claim that there's only one Mac laptop for under $1,000 and it's got a small 13-inch screen, they're absolutely correct. You can't walk out of an Apple Store with (any) laptop for under $1,000 after tax. Certainly you can't walk out of an Apple Store with a 17-inch laptop for under $1,000. Apple's 17-inch MacBook Pro is a professional product for people like pro photographers and videographers and is marketed and priced as such.

So should the Mac faithful get in a tizzy over this imagined slight? Nope. Apple's strategy has never been about taking a majority of market share over Windows. It's been about increasing profit margins ever since the second coming of Steve, when they cleaned out all the "cheap" Macs they were selling at Sears. At the prices Apple charges for Macs (and iPods, and iPhones), Apple is making a healthy profit margin on every product they sell (and they still sell a lot). Apple's control over its ecosystem, innovation, and design are its hallmarks, not its cheap prices.

Sony Cybershot DSC-G3

Sony Cybershot DSC-G3

The point-and-shoot crowd has been all aflutter about the sleek, 10-megapixel Sony Cyber-shot DSC-G3 ($500 as of 3/16/09) ever since its announcement at CES in January. It's the first camera with a built-in Web browser, "one-touch" Wi-Fi photo uploads, and 4GB of on-board flash storage (in addition to a Memory Stick slot).Sony Cybershot DSC-G3 Test ScoresAdmittedly, its Wi-Fi tricks are nothing new: The Eye-Fi card adds Wi-Fi capabilities to any camera that supports it, and cameras from Kodak, Nikon, and Panasonic have all boasted wireless connectivity in the past. The Cyber-shot DSC-G3's browser and flash storage, however, are notable additions to the mix.

What all that Wi-Fi wonderfulness means, of course, is that you can easily upload shots to Daily Motion, Photobucket, Picasa, and Shutterfly directly from the camera, as well as upload videos to YouTube. You can access other photo- and video-sharing sites via the Cyber-shot DSC-G3's Web browser, as well, but the sites mentioned here are made more easily accessible by dedicated icons on the camera's wireless menu screen.

Intel Boosts Speed of Low-power Processors

Intel is expected to refresh its line of laptop chips Monday with new ultra-low-voltage processors that should make ultraportable laptops operate faster without sacrificing battery life.
Intel currently offers ultra-low-voltage processors for fully functional thin and light laptops, such as Apple's expensive MacBook Air and Lenovo's ThinkPad X300. These chips fit into small spaces and draw less power than conventional laptop chips. The chips are about the size of a dime, or 60 percent smaller than mainstream laptop chips.
Laptops with the new chips should boost the speed of applications while drawing the same power as with the earlier chips. The chips will run at clock speeds of up to 1.6GHz, a speed bump from earlier chips that ran at up to 1.40GHz. Depending on the applications, existing ultraportable laptops with ULV chips run from anywhere between four to seven hours.
"There should be no difference to battery life with these speed bumps," said a source familiar with Intel's plans.
The chips will be available on Monday, according to the source. They will be a part of Intel's Montevina mobile platform, which bundles mobile laptop chips and wireless capabilities into laptops.
The refresh comes ahead of Intel's planned release of new ultra-low-voltage processors for inexpensive laptops, which are due in the second quarter as part of the updated Montevina Plus platform.
The new chips include the dual-core Intel Core 2 Duo SU9600 chip, which will run at 1.60GHz, include 3MB of cache and draw 10 watts of power, according to an Intel document seen by IDG News Service. It will be priced at US$289 for 1,000 units. The single-core Intel Core 2 Solo SU3500 chip will run at 1.40GHz, with 3MB of cache. It will be priced at $262.
Intel is also releasing faster low-voltage (LV) processors as part of the laptop chip refresh. The Intel Core 2 Duo SP9600 dual-core chip will run at 2.53GHz, an improvement from previous LV chips that ran at up to 2.40GHz speed, according to the document. The chip will include 6MB of cache, draw 25 watts of power and be priced at $316.
Also being launched is the SL9600 Intel Core 2 Duo, which will run at 2.13GHz, include 6MB of cache and draw 17 watts of power. It will be priced at $316, according to the document.

Aligning Images in Microsoft Word

It's easy enough to get an image into Word 2007—just copy it to the clipboard and paste it in, or choose Insert | Picture. But once the image is in there, you may find it a balky old thing. You can't move it around, and you can't put text alongside it; it's an albatross! The key to unlocking your pasted image lies in the Text Wrapping setting. By default, it's set toIn Line with Text, which might be handy if your image is an arcane rune not found in any font—then it would flow with the text and stay in just the right place. Most of the time, though, you'll want to choose a different setting. Right-click the image, choose Text Wrapping from the context menu, and choose Square or Tight (or any of the other wrapping options). Now your pasted image is no longer locked in place. You can move it where you want, and you can decide how the text should behave around it. You'll find other helpful options in the Picture ribbon that appears when you select an image.

Microsoft Talks Touch in Windows 7

In a lengthy blog post filed Wednesday, Microsoft detailed many of the improvements and quality-control implementations the company is building into Windows 7, specifically for touch applications.

By now, touch has evolved from the selling point of the Tablet PC into a feature that Microsoft is attempting to push into the mainstream. As of now, however, it still has limited penetration, with just the following PCs identified as good candidates for playing with touch on the Windows 7 beta:

# HP TouchSmart All-in-One PCs (IQ500 series & IQ800 series)
# HP TouchSmart tx2 Tablet PC
# Dell Latitude XT or XT2 Tablet PC

Links to the beta drivers are available in the Microsoft blog post.

"With Windows 7 we have enriched the Windows experience with touch, making touch a first-class way to interact with your PC alongside the mouse and keyboard," the Windows Touch team wrote. "We focused on common activities and refined them thoughtfully with touch in mind. You will have the freedom of direct interaction, like being able to reach out and slowly scroll a web page then flick quickly to move through it. With new touch optimized applications from creative software developers you will be able to immerse yourself as you explore you photos, browse the globe, or go after bad guys in your favorite games."

How will you be using touch? At a basic level, touch and touch gestures will be built into the OS, in much the same way that thumbwheel mouse support is included: at the most basic level, the thumbwheel is used to scroll, while more context-aware applications give it a specialized purpose, such as adjusting pitch in a flight simulator, or scrolling through weapons in games.

Windows 7 gestures will include tap and doubletap, as you might do with a mouse button; drag; scrolling, using the main window as a touch point, instead of the scroll bar; zooming in and out by pinching; two-finger tapping, to zoom and orient on the finger; rotate, by touching two spots and then twisting; flicks, for quick shifts left and right; and press-and-hold, for a right-click.

It's also important to note that, to Microsoft, "touch" means multi-touch PCs. "A single-touch PC will have the same functionality on Windows 7 as it does on Vista, but this functionality will not be extended to the Windows 7 capabilities," Microsoft's touch team noted.

Like Apple, Microsoft has the advantage of owning its own applications, including the browser. Internet Explorer 8 has made touch-aware, with support for the touch gestures as well as an address bar that can be dragged down, and is more easily navigable with extra spacing. Windows Media Player also includes larger keys and controls to make it easier to navigate via touch. Aero Peek has been tuned to work with touch - the show desktop button is twice as wide (the only visual sign you are on a Windows Touch PC) and instead of hovering (which you can't do with touch), a press-and-hold on the button activates Aero Peek, Microsoft said.

HP Updates Pavilion Elite Line with Core i7 Power

The Pavilion Elite m9600 series can be equipped with an Intel Core i7 940 processor, up to a 1TB hard drive, and 12GB of system memory.HP on Wednesday updated its high-end multimedia Pavilion Elite PC line with the Intel Core i7 processor. The Pavilion Elite m9600 series can be equipped with an Intel Core i7 940 processor, up to a 1TB hard drive, and 12GB of system memory. The Pavilion Elite continues in the same chassis as the previous model (like the HP Pavilion Elite m9550f), with its two media drive bays and HP Easy Backup button.

The base model starts at $949 with the Intel Core i7 920 processor, a Nvidia GeForce 9600 GS graphics card, a 500GB hard drive, and a SuperMulti DVD burner (dual layer DVD+/-RW). A Blu-ray drive (reader) and an ATI Radeon HD 4850 graphics card are optional upgrades.

T-Mobile Gets In on 3G Modem Action

T-Mobile finally joined the 3G modem club on Wednesday with the webConnect USB Laptop Stick, aka the Huawei E181, the carrier's first high-speed USB modem for laptop PCs.

Verizon, Sprint and AT&T have all offered laptop 3G connectivity for years. But T-Mobile is only ramping up their 3G network now, so they're a bit late to the game. According to Jeremy Korst, T-Mobile's director of broadband products and services, T-Mobile's 3G network covered about 100 million Americans at the end of 2008, and will double its coverage by the end of 2009. The other three carriers say they cover between 250 to 280 million people with their 3G networks.

"We're hugely increasing the size of our network this year," Korst said.

T-Mobile jumps into this competitive fray at pretty much the same price and terms as their bigger cousins. To connect with the modem, you'll need to sign up for a $59.99/month contract, which nets you 5 GB of data per month. Don't go over, or you'll be charged $200 for each additional GB. The modem will roam to more than 200 countries, but at the terrifying rate of $15 per megabyte.

The modem costs $49.99 with a two-year contract, $99.99 with a one-year contract, or $249.99 with no contract.

The smallest of the four national carriers does have one advantage, though: its nationwide Wi-Fi hotspot network. T-Mobile includes unlimited use of their Wi-Fi hotspots with the webConnect plan. That includes hotspots at Starbucks, Barnes & Noble, Borders, and FedEx/Kinkos stores. None of the other carriers include Wi-Fi with their 3G modem plans.

"The reason somebody would choose T-Mobile is that they like the T-Mobile brand, and they like our customer service," Korst said.

The modem is a 3.4" x 1.1" x .47", 1.59-ounce USB stick in black with green trim, that comes in a little leatherette case. It has a MicroSD card slot that can support cards up to 16 GB, and an external antenna jack.

The device works with Windows XP and Vista. Mac support is coming soon, Korst said. T-Mobile doesn't intend to support Linux.

The webConnect has GPS on board, but it isn't activated. T-Mobile will turn the GPS on with an over-the-air update soon, Korst said. A future version of T-Mobile's connection manager may be able to locate T-Mobile Wi-Fi hotspots near where the user is located, he said.

The modem is a quad-band EDGE device, with tri-band HSDPA on the 1,700-, 1,900- and 2,100-MHz bands. It won't roam on AT&T's network in the U.S., Korst said.

The device supports HSDPA 7.2 and HSUPA 5.76, advanced standards that T-Mobile has not yet implemented. For now, it will operate on T-Mobile's HSDPA 3.6 network. That means it will get speeds around 1 megabit down and 350 kilobits up. As T-Mobile upgrades their network, they'll be able to unlock faster speeds through over-the-air software updates.

Lenovo

On Tuesday, Lenovo introduced a pair of new workstation model lines with a focus on green computing, using workstation versions of the new Nehalem processor architecture that makes up the Core i7.

The ThinkStation D20 and S20 are aimed at high-end developers and users, like the game developers attending this week's Game Developer's Conference in San Francisco this week.

A full fifteen Intel Xeon processor models are available to use, including the new "Gainestown" architecture. They include five dual-core and quad-core W35xx Xeons (2.4-GHz to 3.2 GHz, either 4 or 8 Mbytes of cache, 4.8 QPI), five quad-core E55xx Xeons (2.0-GHz to 2.53 GHz, with 4/8-MB of cache, 4.8-5.8 QPI), three quad-core X55xx Xeons (2.66-GHz to 2.93-GHz) and the Intel Xeon W5580, a 3.2-GHz chip with 8 MB of cache and a 6.4 QPI. (QPI replaces the front-side bus speed; the link is measured in gigatransfers per second, from a minimum of 4.8 to 6.4. In throughput terms, those rates equal 24 to 32 Gbytes/s.)

Intel has scheduled a press conference for next Monday to formally introduce the new Nehalem-based Xeon chips.

Most of the new Nehalem chips include a capability called "turbo boost," useful for gaming applications. In a single-threaded game, if no other cores are being used, the system will clock the single core up by about 133 MHz, according to Ming Xie, Lenovo;s worldwide ThinkStation product manager. Conversely, if the system is sitting idle, the workstation will power-manage itself to save power.

The D20 can run as quietly as to produce just 24 decibels, quieter than ambient room noise, via an improved case design and airflow routing.

Both chasses are green, as well: both use 50 percent recycled plastic content, and both use at least 26 percent post-consumer plastic content, equivalent to 19 water bottles, executives said. Both also boast EPEAT Gold, GREENGuard, RoHS, and Energy Star 5.0 compliance.

The D20 and S20 are available with Nvidia Quadro or ATI FirePro professional workstation graphics, and can be equipped with Nvidia's Tesla C1060 GPU co-processor platform. The D20 and S20 are ISV certified, and can run Windows Vista, XP or Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.2.

The S20 starts at $1,070 and the D20 starts at $1,550. Lenovo is targeting the Computer Aided Design (CAD), Digital Content Creation (DCC) and engineering design automation fields with these two workstation lines.

Microsoft Details New Changes to Windows 7

Just weeks after releasing a lengthy list of 36 improvements it plans to make to the release candidate (RC) of Windows 7, Microsoft on Friday unveiled 28 more changes it plans to make before upgrading the operating system from beta to Release Candidate.

The additions are small changes based on user feedback, the majority of which affect Windows Explorer and the desktop experience. It is the second group of revisions Microsoft has disclosed for Windows 7.

"There are many [changes], and this is not an exhaustive list," according to an Engineering Windows 7 blog post. "Of course we continue to gather telemetry from the large number of people running the Beta full time."

Let's take a look at what users can expect.

Desktop Experience

Changes to the desktop primarily deal with making shortcuts more accessible and manageable.

First up is an improved taskbar thumbnail overflow. When you have a lot of browser windows open, rolling over the Internet Explorer icon on the taskbar, for example, will pop up a list of all the open windows rather than thumbnails.

In the beta, those thumbnails include a little "x" box to let you close them out immediately. The list, however, required users to right click and close. In the RC, therefore, there will be a little "x" on each listed item for easy closure.

Microsoft has also added some additional functionality to Windows 7 Jump Lists.

"Right-clicking on the Control Panel icon on the taskbar in Beta revealed a noticeably sparse Jump List," the Windows team wrote. "In RC the Control Panel Jump List offers quick access to recently used items."

In addition, the RC will include a PowerShell Jump List, and let users pin their remote desktop shortcuts to their Jump Lists so they always appear.

Windows Explorer and Libraries

In the interest of performance, Microsoft removed several legacy features when developing Windows 7. Users, however, expressed disappointment about some of these changes – including the deletion of invert selection.

Invert selection is a feature that helps you select a large number of files, all at once. If you have 5 files in Windows Explorer and you highlight one of them, clicking invert selection will switch your selection to highlight only the four other files.

"Despite the small percentage of usage we've recorded, those who missed it have been pretty vocal," Microsoft said, so the function will be re-added to the RC.

The Windows 7 team has also re-organized folder display in Windows Explorer.

"When there isn't enough room to display the parent folder's full name, it will appear truncated instead of going into the overflow,' they said. "If space is especially tight, then the current folder's name may appear truncated too, but in all cases the parent folder's button will remain as a click target in the address bar."

The need to easily find files also applies to music, Microsoft said. In the "Artist" field of the Music Library, songs are group by contributing artists and not album artist. If one of your favorite singers does a lot of duets, their songs will likely show up in different artist categories.

"In RC, the 'Artist' view in the Music Library groups together multiple tracks from an album by the common 'Album Artist' property when it is available, groups tracks from compilation albums together into a 'Various Artists' group and finally resorts to grouping by 'Contributing Artist,'" Microsoft said. "This reduces clutter when browsing music collection by artist, in addition to improving consistency with artist views in other applications and devices."

What else? The "new folder" button in Explorer will always appear, not just when nothing is selected. The context menu will show up when users click on any large white space in Explorer. The Content View section will include labels so users know exactly which properties are being shown for each item. Trimmed down shutdown and log-off WAV files will save up to 400 milliseconds. And PCs and laptops have been added to Device Stage.

Finally, Microsoft has added support for the multi-touch zoom feature in Explorer.

Devices and Printers

Not sure it's safe to remove a device? The Windows 7 beta includes the standard "safely remove hardware" functionality, plus an eject option in the context menus. In the RC, Microsoft will combine these two opens and re-name it "Eject." The tool Notification Area icon still appears, but its context menu now has the option to open devices and printers.

Have your USB devices stopped working after a suspend or resume cycle? When this happened in beta, Microsoft instructed users to unplug and re-plug the device – not a workable option for internal devices. "This workaround will not be needed on RC builds," Microsoft said.

Meanwhile, the team identified and fixed a bug that prevented users from connecting their 1394 HDV cameras for streaming to beta machines.

Microsoft has also restored the "add legacy hardware" functionality to help add non-plug and play devices.

Need for Speed Underground 2

Need for Speed Underground 2 Strategy - Racing tips
Circuit Racing Tips:
Be sure to save some of your NOS for your final lap. This will ensure you have that final boost if you need it.

Look for shortcuts, but don't always use them! In some races, shortcuts are actually longer, or have sharper turns requiring you to lose speed!

Sprint Racing Tips:
On Sprint races be sure to stay close to the turns and stay away from traffic that could cost you the game. Also don’t be afraid to spin the computer out from the back.

This will work in any race that allows NOS. Right before the start of the race, during the countdown, tap the NOS button. This will give you some style points thus refueling your NOS and giving a little extra. Its not a lot but its something to get off the line with.

Drag Racing Tips:
When in a drag race against AI, watch their movements during the race if they are ahead of you. They will be more aware of upcoming obstacles and traffic.

If you're first during the drag race and enemy is right behind you, he will surely want to get ahead of you. To avoid this, you should often look behind and if enemy try to change the line, quickly drive on the same line.

If you can't finish a drag race, because you blow you're engine, try to change Final Drive Ratio scrollbar nearer Top Speed. (Performance Tuning -> Tune settings -> Drivetrain).

When drag racing on the PC, try using a steering wheel or joystick, anything that'll get you analog control of the throttle. That way, it's easier to get perfect shifts right on 1st, then 2nd gear, which helps dramatically in getting the early lead and hopefully, winning the race.

Many of you already had the problem of blown engine because of using nitro. If you are in the 4th level of transmission (I don't know the exact word for this, sry) do a short shift so the arrow comes low in the 5th level, now you can use nitro before blowing up your engine and your still going fast.

Later in the game, on the longer courses, you will need car with a 6-speed gearbox to avoid blowing your engine.

In one of the drage races in the second sponsor level, there are a lot of traffic cars which makes it almost impossible to finish. Just do it slowly, the other cars will get totaled and you can just slowly do it and dodge the traffic.

When you are racing in quick race or multiplayer online, after unlocking all the peformance upgrades. The best way to win a race is to stay behind the first opponent and try to be very close to him. in that way, you are earning Style points which will be an extra nitros to your car. through the race, in about 1/2 to 3/4 to the finishing line, tab the nitros or keep pressing the nitros button which will last longer.

Drift Racing Tips:
Choosing the right car is essential when preparing for a Drift race. All wheel, rear wheel and front wheel drive cars all perform differently.

If you can control your car exceptionally well, then go tune it to have the front moderately "loose" or so that it loses traction easy, and the rear as "loose" as you can get it, if you experiment with what works best one your car via the test track then you will have a car that drifts easy, yet still controllable, another thing is to use handbrake sparingly due to the fact that it burns to much momentum and speed reducing chances of chaining it.

If you have a rear will drive car with lots of power, sit on about 30 to 40 km then gas it as soon as you turn this is more effective then pressing the handbrake but if you want to keep it going just zig zag. I find this more effective with an Audi TT with all level one upgrades or higher. If you do have higher performance then you may find it hard to finish in time but the scoring is taken care of.

When you see you're about to loose control of you're car and going to hit a wall or traffic cars, push the brake/reverse trigger and the hand-brake at same time and hold'em until you see the points go in the bank, usually, you'll get the points before the car completely stop or hit the wall!

On open course drifts that have turn-around driveways, you can see these on your map as a separate road that goes off the main road and reconnects. Take the driveway and slide around and back onto main road for "Insane" drift points, 60,000+.

Street X Tips:
A tip for racing on Street X is to make sure that you hit the other cars out of the way. Hit them as though you are playing dodge 'ems, and hit the back corners of their cars and launch them into a spin.

You can either hit them out of they way, by hitting their back corners (aka the P.I.T. maneuver) or you can try to take the inside corner of every turn. This gets you around the course faster, and also prevents the opponents from trying to spin you.

In order to have great performances in Street X racing, just tune your gear ratios for acceleration, therefore you have to concentrate all your transmission on acceleration. Therefore all the bars have to been set for optimum acceleration, cause you need no top speed for Street X.

URL Racing Tips:
When you're racing a URL race make sure when you fill the N2O as much as you can via: Drafting, Fastest lap, Leading lap and Power slides, but don't overdo it with the powerslides. NOS can help you to get in first, creating and maintaining a gap. Depending on opponents strength you can get a gap from 3 or 4 seconds and if you're lucky even 12 seconds. When starting at the back, rev as high as possible to get a good burnout score. Then draft until you reach between 500 and 900 points this should give you enough NOS for the next two laps if used sparingly i.e. on the exit of the apex of turns for acceleration and long straights.

Outrun Racing Tips:
To beat an opponent the fastest come up on him at near top speed and right when you get near him press the button to start the outrun. He will flip over your car or be hit to the side and you will win in seconds.

The tip is when racing outrun races do it on the highway it makes things a lot easier and don't accept the race until your right up on them so you can spin them out first thing and almost always win with in ten to twenty seconds as opposed to two or three minutes. This will not always work but does most of the time, works like a charm for levels 1&2.

If you are far enough ahead of your opponent and on the motorway turn a hairpin into an off ramp and you opponent will overshoot it and take a long time to recover.

When racing in Outrun mode get as close as you can before challenging them. Then challenge them and press the nos and try to ram the side of your opponent causing them to lose control and crash. Another tip is when racing try to go towards a place where you can make a u-turn, if you do it right then you will get a big lead while they try to turn around.

There are two good ways to easily win an Outrun. The first is to come up behind the opponent and do what is called a PIT Manoeuvre. To do this you must go to the side of your opponent and with the front of your car lean sideways into the back of their car. If done correctly then their car should spin round but remember to press up to start the outrun just before they spin because this will make then stop and they take ages to turn round. The second way is to drive through to 5 fountains in the City Core. It takes a lot of practice to do it but when learnt you will be able to do it with ease and your opponent will always crash trying to follow you.

If you are enough ahead of your opponent, use shortcuts. Opponent may not use shortcut, but he can use it and he will crash on it.

To load up NOS real quick, drive backwards until you hit max RPM and then steer hard left or hard right. This will let you do a J-turn for a massive 500 points! This is easiest on the highway, if you start out facing the oncoming traffic, but parking lots work well too.

For some nasty Outrun action, allow your opponent to close in behind you, as you approach an off ramp of the highway. Try to push him into the concrete at top of the junction, where the roads split. If this works - he'll be standing still and you'll be rocketing away to victory. If this doesn't work, you'll spin around; grab your handbrake to control the spin, and shoot NOS to chase after your opponent; he'll be slowed down enough to let you draft from his rear. try to push him into a spin while he's still figuring out what happened.

If you have the lead and cannot seem to lose your opponent, head towards the Fountains at the City Center and weave through them. Your opponent is most likely to crash into the fountains. Easier done using a small car, e.g. A3 or 206 because of their size. Or using an SUV, due to their "lack of Speed". Practice makes perfect.

Choose the Right Port for Your HDTV

Video sources such as Blu-ray players, cable and satellite set-top boxes, and console game systems provide an array of connection options to use with an HDTV. For optimal picture quality, always use the best port that the source and the TV share. For instance, if an upscaling DVD player and a HDTV both have HDMI ports (a single-wire, digital audio/video connection), then always use the HDMI ports. The next best port option would be component video input (a three-cable analog-video-only system). Ports such as composite (the yellow RCA-style port) or S-Video (a four-wire, single-cable video connection) do not support HD formats and should be avoided when connecting HD-compatible gear. If you have no choice but to use composite or S-Video, opt for the latter: It will provide a more detailed picture.

What Will the Windows 7 Logo Mean?

What Will the Windows 7 Logo Mean?

Microsoft has had a series of logo programs over the years for hardware and software products to use to display compatibility and other requirements for Microsoft platforms. Recently Microsoft released a document detailing the requirements for the Windows 7 Client Software Logo (see below). Many of the requirements are security-oriented, but in general they should help a program provide a good experience.

Here are some of them:

  • Applications must conform to the guidelines of the Anti-Spyware Coalition, an industry coalition with broad membership. "Any application found to be malware or spyware as defined by the Anti-Spyware Coalition will lose its logo eligibility and any related benefits. "

  • Clean, reversible installation. "A clean, reversible, installation allows users to successfully manage (deploy and remove) applications on their systems."

  • Digitally sign files and drivers. "All executable files must be signed with an Authenticode certificate. All kernel mode drivers installed by the application must have a Microsoft signature obtained through the WHQL (Windows Hardware Quality Labs) or DRS [I have no idea what this is] program."

  • Support x64 versions of Windows . "To maintain compatibility with 64-bit versions of Windows, applications must natively support 64-bit or, at a minimum, 32-bit Windows-based applications must run seamlessly on 64-bit systems."

  • Follow User Account Control (UAC) Guidelines. "Most applications do not require administrator privileges at run time, and should be just fine running as a standard-user." This is perhaps the most important of the guidelines.

  • Support Multiuser Sessions. "Application settings and data files should not persist across users. A user's privacy and preferences should be isolated to the user's session. "

  • Applications should take full advantage of defense mechanisms for them built into the operating system, including:

    • /GS Stack buffer overrun detection

    • /SafeSEH exception handling protection

    • No eXecute (NX) / Data Execution Prevention (DEP) / eXecute Disable (XD)

    • Address space layout randomization (ASLR)

    • Heap randomization

    • Stack randomization

    • Heap corruption detection

If only all programs followed these guidelines! I wonder how well Microsoft's own hold up to them. The logo programs have probably lost some of their prominence in recent years and it's a shame, because these are good rules. If you restrict your system to programs like these you could feel pretty safe.

Dirt 2 First Look

Dirt 2 First Look

The original Dirt--a rally racing game carrying on the legacy of the Colin McRae series--won over fans and critics with its combination of gorgeous visuals, varied events, and an impressive damage modeling system. In other words, it was a hit across the board, which naturally means that Codemasters is hard at work on a sequel. Known quite simply as Dirt 2, this follow-up was unveiled by the English publisher at a press event last night in San Francisco.

During the presentation, the big theme that Codemasters was hammering on for this sequel was the idea of off-road racing with an extreme sports attitude. What does that mean, exactly? The first game featured voice-over work by motocross legend Travis Pastrana, but this time around Codemasters is looking to go full tilt with the game's presentation. A teaser video revealed a scene from the player's RV, the hub where you control all your career mode exploits, and it was a raucous collection of grime, half-naked women, and general insanity. That should serve as a good hint of what the overall attitude will be.

But of course, this is still a racing game, and gussying up the user interface will take you only so far. Thankfully, Codemasters revealed some intriguing information about the type of racing you'll be doing this time around. The biggest chunk of information they let out is the inclusion of stadium rally events. They showed a gameplay video of a fictional stadium built around London's Battersea Power Station, with all manner of twisty dirt roads, puddles, and smoke stacks making up a very gritty and industrial-looking setting. Another similarly fictional stadium they mentioned is one set in Los Angeles for an event they're calling the Stadium King Shootout. Apparently, they've done work to the engine to make these stadium events feel quite massive, with crowd sizes going from 40,000 in Grid (a Codemasters racing game using the same engine released last year) to 120,000 in Dirt 2.

However, it's not just the number of fans watching you peel out and smash your front end that has been tweaked. A tech video shown during the presentation revealed some other enhancements to the game's engine. The biggie is probably advanced water physics: the game will be going beyond the rain-slick roads in the first game to include puddles that appear to be at least a foot deep. This new type of hazard ought to severely impact your driving ability and add a new dimension to the way you'll be racing around the course, because no longer will the optimal line around a corner always be the best one to take if it happens to bring you through a miniature lake.

In terms of locations, you can expect to see races held in London and Los Angeles, as previously mentioned, but also in some less expected spots, including Croatia, China, and Malaysia. Those Asian locales should come as quite a departure from the European-heavy settings in the first game. Another welcome departure is in multiplayer mode: you will now be able to take part in online matches against other drivers in real time. If that doesn't get you excited, you're probably not familiar with the first game's solitary, time-trial multiplayer, which felt like little more than a mean prank in the context of the great game built around it.

We'd love to have seen more on Dirt 2 than the few brief videos shown during this presentation, because what we did see looks promising. You can expect more coverage leading up to the game's release, which is currently slotted for late September.
